22-Apr-2017

Society Cafe is pleased to present the 13th Annual Unitarian Society of Ridgewood Two Piano Festival on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 3:00 pm.

Six duo piano teams will perform a wide selection of music for two pianos, including works by Bach, Poulenc, Rachmaninoff. and Richard Lane.  Pianists will include Diane Battersby, Michael S. Caldwell, Deborah Goodell, Dorothy Kane, Michelle Kuo, Christopher Kuo, Ron Levy, Susan LaFever, Angelyn MacWilliams and Jacqueline Schiller.

All of the duo piano teams have appeared in previous Festivals and several perform year round as duo pianists. All of the pianists in the concert are well known in the area as professional musicians and teachers. Many are members of the Professional Music Teachers’ Guild, to which this concert is benefitting a portion of its proceeds.

This year's 13th Two Piano Festival will feature two major works for two pianos: Poulenc’s “Sonata” and Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances”.  The former will be performed by Ron Levy and Susan La Fever.  Mr. Levy is Music Director of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, pianist for the Ridgewood Orpheus Men’s Glee Club and the Ridgewood Singers. He is also a founding member of the chamber ensemble, Palisades Virtuosi.  Susan LaFever is currently Music Director at the United Methodist Church in Ridgewood. She also directs the Ridgewood Singers and is pianist for The Ridgewood Choral.

The “Symphonic Dances, Movt. 1" will be performed by Michelle and Christopher Kuo, a mother-son duo piano team.  They made their professional debut together at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in October 2015, and made an exciting return there on October 15, 2016. They are currently on a benefit tour for nonprofit organizations across the country, with engagements in New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas, and New Jersey.

The program will also include Richard Lane’s “Carolina Variations.” Mr. Lane was a native of Paterson, NJ.  His compositions include orchestral, band and choral works, as well as piano concertos, piano solos, works for voice and piano, and solo works for almost every instrument. His music has been performed throughout the world. Mr. Lane, who died in 2004, had strong ties to both the Orpheus Men’s Glee Club and The Ridgewood Choral as pianist and composer. The “Carolina Variations” will be performed by Ron Levy and Michael S. Caldwell.
